PROTECTION SYSTEM

WHAT IT IS

MODERN COSMO is a brush-on storage coating designed to protect metal surfaces from corrosion due to moisture during long-term storage and periods of extended inactivity. Recommended for firearms, bladed implements, and steel tools stored for extended lengths of time. Ideal for seasonal storage, collection storage, and transport without controlled atmosphere.

MODERN COSMO applies warm, sets as a visible protective film, and removes cleanly by warming and wiping off with mineral spirits.

WHAT IT IS NOT

This is not a cleaner, degreaser, bore solvent, lubricant, or rust remover. MODERN COSMO is a storage coating — meant to be applied and left in place. That’s it. That’s all.

For use on clean, dry metal surfaces only. MODERN COSMO was not designed to protect wood or plastic, and MAY discolour wood and plastic. Avoid prolonged contact with rubber as it may degrade rubber.

PREPARE & APPLY

STEP 1: PREP

Field-strip and THOROUGHLY clean and dry your piece with mineral spirits. For firearms, this means a deep cleaning of any carbon/metal fouling in the barrel, chamber, bolt, muzzle. Really get in there. MODERN COSMO is a storage coating — it protects whatever  you leave underneath it - the good and the bad! Remove all cleaning residue and fingerprints using 99% isopropyl alcohol and let completely dry. Always follow safe firearm handling practices. Ensure the firearm is clear before you get going. Duh.

STEP 2: WARM

FOR BEST RESULTS, APPLY TO ROOM TEMPERATURE ITEMS. Leaving the cap on, set the jar of MODERN COSMO in a shallow bowl or pan of hot water. OR use hair dryer or heat gun (on low) to gently warm the surface of the product. It just needs to be brushable, not boiling. DO NOT USE OPEN FLAME OR MICROWAVE, you impatient zazranets.

It’s also a good idea to heat the metal item with hair dryer, one section at a time as you apply. Just until it’s warm to the touch. You can ensure the product really finds it’s way in by passing the hair dryer or heat gun over the area after application. Go easy - no need to melt way all your hard work!

STEP 3: APPLY

Heat the area of the item you wish to treat using a hair dryer or heat gun (on low). Apply thin coat of MODERN COSMO in even strokes, using a 1-inch natural bristle brush. Multiple coats can be applied. Avoid wood and plastic as MODERN COSMO MAY discolour. QUICKLY wipe off rubber surfaces as the product can degrade rubber if left on too long.

For firearm barrels, attach bore brush to cleaning rod, liberally dip in product and push through, from bore to muzzle. Remove brush and pull rod back through. Yes, obviously, remove the bolt.

Reattach brush on rod and cover with patch. Brush some Modern Cosmo onto patch and push rod back through. This will force product into the rifling. NEVER pull the brush back through. Apply product to brush again and run two more times, heating and rotating the barrel between passes. Inspect and repeat as necessary.

For longer barrels, this is where that irrigation syringe comes in handy. Draw some melted product into the syringe and gently release into the barrel from the muzzle before you push the rod through from the bore.

You can use MODERN COSMO to “cap” barrels and chambers. Pinch a small amount of non-melted MODERN COSMO and roll into a little ball, and press into the chamber. Repeat for the muzzle.

For pesky crevices and hard to reach areas, such as bolts, heat area, brush product on and then apply heat to coax product in.

Wipe off excess product, unless you enjoy the aesthetic. Allow to dry.

Wrap in wax paper and store item.

R2S OIL

(Return to Service)

Warm the coated surface until the film softens, then wipe clean with a fresh, dry cloth to remove the majority. Use mineral spirits or approved solvent to remove the remainder. Do not use gasoline or automotive fuels.

Detail areas with a pick tool and cotton patch. allow to dry. For firearms, heat the barrel, receiver and other metal parts as you did for application. Dip a FRESH nylon bore brush in mineral spirits and run through from bore to muzzle to loosen and remove product. Cover brush with mineral spirit-soaked cleaning patch and run through. Inspect barrel and repeat as necessary. Allow to dry.

Apply R2S OIL for immediate short-term use (or CLP/preferred lubricant if you have the time for a thorough lubrication) to exposed surfaces and lubricate firearm following manufacturer’s directions.

R2S OIL Includes a polar additive system that improves penetration, helps the oil work under residual coatings, and keeps the oil film even and stable. This additive system includes dispersants and surface-active compounds to improve wetting, penetration, and oil film consistency.
